Basic Concept

Aquaponics is a food production system based upon mother-nature’s own method of recycling fish waste by feeding it to plants. In a nutshell, that’s the bare-bones definition. You should also know it is highly adaptable to home-based use, is low maintenance, produces very high amount of food/area (food density), and requires very little external inputs.

How it Works – Layman’s Version

Live fish are grown in a tank. Tank water, which contains fish waste, is pumped from the tank to grow-beds. Grow beds are simple containers filled with gravel and which have plants planted in them on top. Gravel in the grow beds will naturally come to host bacterial colonies which will convert fish waste into plant food. Plants consume the food, water is returned to the fish tank via gravity, and you get to eat organically grown fruits, vegetables, and fish. The fish are happy because their water is kept clean. The plants are happy and grow quickly because they are receiving nutrients 24/7, and you should be happy and healthy having access to home-grown, organically produced food. The only external inputs to the system are electricity and fish food – however even the fish food can be system-grown.

How it Works – Detailed Explanation

You need not understand anything more than the layman’s explanation above in order to get started with Aquaponics. However, a little more knowledge certainly doesn’t hurt and will help you understand how the system works.

Aquaponics takes advantage of mother-nature’s own methods to convert fish waste into plant food. At the heart of this system is what is commonly referred to as the Nitrogen Cycle.

Nitrogen is an essential element necessary for life on Earth as we know it. The Nitrogen Cycle is a series of chemical processes whereby nitrogen from the environment is consumed by living organisms and processed into various different nitrogen-based chemical forms. This is accomplished via a chain of living organisms, each utilizing nitrogen in some way to live, and converting it into another nitrogen-based chemical structure which is then needed by another organism. In this way, nitrogen is continually cycled from the environment, through the biological system, and back into the environment.

West Edmonton Mall, arial view

We’re presently at West Edmonton Mall, measuring sunlight intensity & angles over time. We’ve ben surveying the malls in Edmonton regarding our intent to offer  joint-venture to them regarding our Blackwinter energy system, and that means such glorious and fun things as measuring sunlight intensity and angles over time as the day progresses.

Yes, it’s every bit as unexciting as it sounds, but it has to be done so that if they say ‘Yes’ things can be done with as much energy-capture efficiency as possible, and it’ll save time getting things rolling. Windspeed measurements today, kinda pointless as it’s a mostly clear, sunny and calm/still day. At least it’s not -30C, and this is the last mall we have to survey.

Shopping malls, on average, can host a few hundred Megawatts of generating capacity to the Grid AFTER meeting their own power needs.
I don’t need to mention what kind of revenue this would earn, and it would be a 24/7/365 revenue stream coming in coupled to elimination of energy overhead costs…which is a Considerable amount of income.
Why shouldn’t malls be sources of Clean, sustainable, quiet and abundant energy?
It eliminates load on the grid, actually reverses load to be factual, and is a direct, genuine benefit to their communities and in the overall as those Mall-Megawatts displace the same Megawattage produced by combustion-based powerplants.

West Edmonton Mall…it’s staggering to think of how much generating capacity this mall can host. It’s one of the largest malls in north america, and our rough (VERY conservative) estimates say that this mall could become a Gigawatt-class energy supplier.

Think about that…a Gigawatt-class Solar & Wind generating facility, built into a mall…nearly Invisible, clean, quiet, no danger to birds, nor using virgin land.
Everyone wants the future of sustainable energy ‘Right Now’, and we’re doing what we can (Husband & I) to make it happen, to the benefit of us all, and future generations.

I started removing myself from groups there with a Dedicated anti-islam focus. I’m not doing this because I’m giving-up, I’m doing so because anti-islam resistance work was starting to become my life.

Some would think that laudable, well, my Family comes first, always has and always will.

That said, it’s time to re-make my facebook page into something Affirming, an Oasis of something good for my friends and those who happen past. However, you’ll see me start to post again on BNO, Atlas Shrugged, Jihad Watch, Winds of Jihad and other solid anti-islam sites run by some of the Beacons in this Resistance.

Then, I can have my life, and still remain in the online war vs. islam.

Yes, I’ve been away for a while, Life makes it’s demands and must come first, but I’m back now and rolling back up to full-steam and Experience has been a good teacher.
